US President Joe Biden issued an executive order to end the Trump Immigration Restrictions on new Green Cards on March 1, 2021.
Former US President Donald Trump halted 4 types of immigration visas including the issuing of Green Cards as a measure to protect the US job market for US citizens.
The ban was set to expire on December 31, 2020, but President Trump extended it until the end of March 2021.
Since Joe Biden took office, he proclaimed that “shutting the door on legal immigrants does not advance the interest of the United States”.
He also added that “It also harms industries in the United States that utilize talent from around the world. And it harms individuals who were selected to receive the opportunity to apply, and those who have likewise received, immigrant visas through the Fiscal Year 2020 Diversity Visa Lottery.”
The ban has resulted in a backlog of 358,000 Green Cards.
